SUBWAY NIGHTMARE

IN NEW YORK AND OTHER METROPOLITAN CITIES IN USA, SUB WAY TRAINS ARE VERY MUCH IN USE FOR DAILY COMMUTERS. IT’S LIKE LOCAL TRAINS IN MUMBAI, YOU CAN CATCH IT ALMOST EVERY FEW MINS TO EVERY STATION IN MUMBAI. A VERY CONVENIENT AND FAST WAY TO REACH TO YOUR DESTINATION IN WORKING DAYS IN SUCH BIG AND BUSY CITIES. WELL IT’S CONVENIENT FOR SURE BUT IN NEW YORK CITY, SUB WAY STATIONS ARE A BIT SCARY TOO. THERE IS A CITY CALLED QUEENS, WHICH IS A HUB OF BLACK PEOPLE AND HIGH ON CRIME RATE. ONCE WHEN I WAS NEW IN AMERICA, I WAS VISITING NEW YORK WITH A FRIEND. I WAS VERY EXCITED TO TRAVEL IN SUBWAY. ALL THOSE STATIONS WERE UNDERGROUND OF COURSE AND WERE KIND OF CREEPY. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME IN ANYTHING LIKE THAT, A SUPERFAST UNDERGROUND TRAIN. WE SPENT WHOLE DAY ROAMING IN NEW YORK CITY AND MANHATTAN, TAKING EYE FEASTS ON PEOPLE, FASHION, GORGEOUS SURROUNDINGS AND TALL BUILDINGS.

WELL EVERYTHING MUST COME TO AN END SO FINALLY WE DECIDED TO GO BACK HOME. IT WAS DARK ALREADY; WE WENT INSIDE A SUBWAY STATION, TOOK OUR TRAVEL CARD AND WAITED FOR OUR FAST RAIN TO CATCH. IT WAS QUITE AND DARK INSIDE, YOU COULD HARDLY SEE ANYONE. WELL FINALLY A TRAIN CAME; SOME PEOPLE GOT OUT AND WENT TO THEIR DESTINATIONS. NO ONE LOOKS ANY OTHER PERSON THERE IN EYES. I HEARD IT’S JUST NOT RIGHT TO LOOK INTO ANYONE’S EYE THERE; ESPECIALLY BLACK PEOPLE DON’T LIKE IT. AND WELL THEY WERE NOTORIOUS TO PULL THEIR GUNS ON ANY SMALL FEUD. WE BOTH WERE VERY CAUTIOUS AND A BIT SCARED. FINALLY OUR TRAIN CAME. DOORS GOT OPEN FOR LIKE 30 SECONDS OR SO AND THEN THEY GOT CLOSED AND TRAIN WENT AWAY. OH TO MY HORROR, I WAS SO MUCH ENGROSSED IN MY THOUGHTS THAT MY FRIEND GOT ON TRAIN AND I LEFT ON STATION. WHEN TRAIN STARTED FROM STATION, I SNAPPED OUT OF IT AND SAW MY TRAIN GOING AND MY FRIEND SCREAMING FROM INSIDE, WHICH OF COURSE I COULD NOT HEAR. I COULD NOT UNDERSTAND FOR A MOMENT WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW. IT WAS A NEW COUNTRY, NEW PEOPLE AND A NEW SYSTEM FOR ME. AND TO MY HORROR, THERE WAS NO ONE ON THE STATION, IT WAS ALL DARK. THERE WERE NO NETWORK SIGNALS TO MY MOBILE, AND WAS NO PUBLIC TELEPHONE AS WELL. AND I KNEW IF I GO OUTSIDE THEN I CAN’T COME BACK ON SAME CARD INSIDE, AND THE WORST PART, MY PURSE WAS WITH MY FRIEND. SO THERE I WAS WITH NO MONEY, NO PHONE AND NO ONE ON THE STATION.

I KEPT REPEATING TO MYSELF DON’T BE SCARED. I SAT ON A BENCH AND WAITED FOR THE TRAIN TO COME. ALL OF A SUDDEN I SAW A BLACK HIPPY GUY COMING FROM THE DARK. HE SAW ME AND I SUDDENLY REMEMBERED TO NOT LOOK HIM INTO HIS EYES. HE WAS KIND OF COMING TOWARDS ME OR ATLEAST I THOUGHT SO, AS HE WAS COMING CLOSER AND MY HEART BEATS WERE INCREASING, MY MIND STOPPED WORKING AT ALL. AND THEN I HEARD A TRAIN COMING. I JUMPED UP AND WENT TOWARDS THE TRACK RIGHT AWAY. AS SOON AS THE TRAIN CAME, MANY PEOPLE CAME OUTSIDE; I GRABBED THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO A FEMALE. A WORKING WOMAN FROM THAILAND CAME OUT AND WAS GOING OUT OF THE STATION; I WENT TO HER AND TOLD HER MY STORY. SHE WAS SO GENUINE; SHE OFFERED TO STAY WITH ME TILL MY FRIEND GETS BACK TO ME. I FELT SO MUCH RELIEF. THE NEXT TRAIN CAME BACK FROM THE OTHER SIDE AND SO MY FRIEND IN IT. FINALLY I GOT OUT OF MY SUBWAY NIGHTMARE AND SAFELY HOME. I LATER REALIZED, THAT METRO STATION WHERE I WAS STUCK, WAS QUEENS.

THE BEST PART WAS THAT STRANGER, WHO DID NOT EVEN KNOW ME, AND WAS GETTING LATE FOR HER HOME, BUT STILL STAYED FOR ME. DO WE LEARN SOMETHING FROM THIS? I DID. I WISH WE COULD BRING THAT HOSPITALITY IN OUR COUNTRY WHEN PEOPLE COME TO INDIA FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO VISIT US. BUT UNFORTUNATELY I HEARD A LOT OF HORRIFIC EXPERIENCES AND STORIES ABOUT INDIAN AND THEIR BEHAVIOR WITH FOREIGNER VISITORS. WE DO SAY “ATITHI DEVO BHAV” BUT ONLY ON BOOKS.
